What to expect when moving to Hawaii
Moving to Hawaii is something many people will only dream of. You’re about to make it happen, and we’d love to help you make a smooth transition to your new home. In partnership with our colleagues at Royal Hawaiian Movers, we’ve put together a few tips so you’ll understand what to expect when making the Hawaiian islands your home.
The simple life: You’ll find all kinds of people across all of the Hawaiian islands, but if we had to pick out a theme, it’s that many people here live a simpler, more laid back lifestyle. Formal, close-toed shoes often lose out to slippers (that’s “flip flops” to mainlanders). Elaborate dinners are replaced by fresh, local produce prepared simply and deliciously. Barbecues and potlucks are more common than cocktail parties. The lifestyle you establish in Hawaii will be uniquely your own, but if you feel compelled to strip your possessions down to the essentials and keep your life simple, you’ll fit right in. (Of course, we’re also happy to help you move an entire houseload to Hawaii!)
Local culture: You’ll discover that Hawaii is an incredibly diverse place with influences from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, Europe, the islands of the South Pacific, the United States and beyond. In fact, Hawaii was crowned the most ethnically and racially diverse state in the U.S. in a recent study.i Among many of the benefits that come with this diversity include meals you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re willing to try new tastes—like saimin, manapua and malasadas—as well as local favorites like poke, poi and haupia, you’ll discover a whole new side of the islands to embrace.
