Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Hilo

Residents find Hilo a charming place to live with a strong community spirit. In and around the Hilo area, you can soak up the natural beauty of the area’s lush landscape on a daily basis, including rainforests, waterfalls, and scenic coastlines.

In addition to the cultural events, festivals, and farmers’ markets in Hilo, residents can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, snorkeling, and exploring the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Finally, Hilo is known for a more affordable cost of living than you’ll find on Oahu, Kauai, or Maui. That’s especially true when it comes to the price of housing, which tends to be lower in Hilo than in many of the other population hubs in Hawaii.

The one downside to living on Hilo is its frequent rain. Downtown Hilo can see as much as 146 inches of rain each year. However, the area’s frequent rain fuels its gorgeous verdant landscape, so it does come with significant upside.

If you’re drinking from a public water source, the tap water in Hilo is safe to drink

On the Big Island, some residents use a catchment system, collecting and using rainwater as their primary water source. If the system is properly maintained—and the water is tested and treated/filtered—then it can be safe to drink. Otherwise, bottled water is readily available in many stores in and around Hilo.

The answer to this age-old debate all comes down to whether you prefer:

  • The warm, sunny Kona coast, which tends to be busier and livelier, since it acts as the primary hub for Big Island tourism.
  • The cool, lush Hilo side of the island, which tends to be quieter and more laid-back, with more of a traditional feel.

If you’re moving to the Big Island, consider staying on both sides temporarily until you know which area you prefer. Both have their pros and cons. Experiencing both will give you a better feel for the lifestyle—and the weather patterns—you prefer.

Hilo enjoys mild temperatures year-round, including during the winter months. During winter, daytime temperatures typically range from the mid-70s to low 80s. Evening and early morning temperatures can drop as low as the mid-60s, so you’ll want to hang on to a few sweaters and light jackets if you make the move to Hilo.

Additionally, during the winter months, Hilo can see a bit more rain, with November being the historically wettest month in Hilo.

Hilo has been named one of the rainiest cities in the U.S., with at least some precipitation on more than 275 days each year. However, it’s not always rainy in Hilo. Instead, it’s common to experience frequent passing showers, rather than a continuous, all-day rain.

We won’t downplay the impact of rain on Hilo. Due to its geography, the windward side of the Big Island receives a significant share of rain. However, it’s often a passing phenomenon that will soon allow you to go about your day.
